Summers County Board of Education Joins WV BOE’s in Social Media Litigation to Protect Students

April 17, 2024
Charleston, West Virginia. Charleston, West Virginia attorney, Charles R. “Rusty” Webb of the Webb Law Centre, PLLC, announced today that the Summers County Board of Education has voted to join Braxton, Harrison, Fayette, Wayne, Mercer, Calhoun, Monroe, Pocahontas, Webster, Greenbrier, Wyoming and Nicholas County Boards of Education in filing suit against META to protect students and prevent future addiction.
The social media (TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram) use ineffective age verification measures, easily allowing children to access their products. Parents are essentially defenseless against the tactics of these companies. These products have features that prevent parents from monitoring and limiting children’s use.
In April 2021, former Facebook employee Frances Haugen revealed that the company had detailed knowledge of its negative impact on young users’ mental health. Facebook and Instagram hid information from the public, driving teens’ interest in their products to increase their profit and refusing to take steps to prevent harm. FAILURE TO PROTECT people can become addicted to social media.
As a result, School Districts around the Country are having to spend monies for increased disciplinary proceedings, mental health assistance and other expenses directly related to the social media addiction created by META.
Attorney Rusty Webb calls it “the worst epidemic”, in reference to the JUUL and opioid epidemics WV is experiencing right now.
The Summers County Board of Education joins hundreds of school districts around the country that have or are filing actions against META.
Webb encourages all WV county boards of education who want monies to assist in the costs of assisting addicted students to contact him.
