Bernard R. “Butch” Bennett,
Bernard R. “Butch” Bennett, 77, of Salem, WV, Big Isaac Community, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 after a 4-year battle with multiple myeloma.
He was born August 22, 1946, to the late Claud E. and Mary Faye Jerden Bennett in Big Isaac, WV. He married S. Darlene Morgan on April 2, 1971, in the United Methodist Parsonage, Jarvisville, WV by the Rev. Paul Pike.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Jennifer A (Mike) Stills, Westerville, OH and Michael A (Nicole) Bennett, Clarksburg, WV; six grandchildren, Tyler Stills, Taylor Stills, Taryn Stills, Sara Comer, Jake Comer and Carson Bennett; one sister, Betty L. Bennett Frame, Heath, OH; several nieces and nephews. He was very close to his first cousins and truly enjoyed spending time with them.
Butch was a 1964 graduate of Doddridge County High School and a 1968 Graduate of Salem College. He was a co-owner with his Dad of Better Cars, Inc., in Salem, WV. He retired from the US Army as Shop Chief in charge of heavy equipment maintenance. He was a member of the 119th Engineering Company, US Army National Guard for 37 years, and retired as Sergeant First Class in 2006. He saw active duty service during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
He was a member of the Big Isaac United Methodist Church and served as a trustee, adult Sunday School teacher and many other jobs that didn’t have titles. He was also a trustee of the Big Isaac Cemetery.
He was very athletic, playing basketball from grade school through college intramurals. He also ran track in high school. He played fast-pitch softball for a Big Isaac team and finally the Log Cabin Supper Club, resulting in many lasting friendships over the years. One of his greatest joys after watching both of his children play sports in high school was watching his grandchildren play a wide range of sports, from soccer to track to gymnastics to basketball to cheer. His hobbies included woodworking, fixing and remodeling anything you could think of. He loved his tools and his power equipment. He loved farming and camping and had a soft spot for animals.
Mr. Bennett requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to benefit an adopted Haitian family can be made payable to, Michelle Lamb, 241 Maken Road, Salem, WV 26426.
The family would like to thank Dr. Salman Osman, UHC, Oncology for his expert and compassionate care throughout his battle, as well as Amedisys Home Health Care, and WVU Medicine Hospice who made it possible to remain in his home.
