The Weekly Shaman

With Saint Patrick’s Day Coming I thought I would do an article on the color green. Green has a very clear connection to nature and the return of spring. The Egyptian god Osiris was sometimes depicted as having green skin. Being a god of rebirth, the Egyptians made effigies of him out of the final harvest which would be re-planted in the ground during spring planting. The Green Man with his foliate face was often depicted as green and was the spirit of nature incarnate. Fairies were often depicted as wearing green garments, usually made from foliage. Green has a clear connection to fertility and abundance. The lighting of green candles were believed to encourage abundance and wealth. The use of green is used in many spells and rituals to help encourage good fortune. Green shamrocks are often a symbol of St. Patrick’s and is connected to good fortune. This is also the time of year we hear the nocturnal chant of the spring peeps they are a sign of the return of spring and usually green. Leprechauns are usually depicted as wearing green garments. In the ancient world green was also a sign of the return offspring and the end of the blight of winter. Happy Spring!!
