Government

From Shelly Moore Capito

Dear West Virginian,
Recently, President Biden and his administration announced a disastrous decision to halt new liquified natural gas (LNG) export projects in the United States. This move is incredibly shortsighted and it’s clear it was done to appease young climate activists. This will hinder American energy production that is critical for our economy.
Last week, I spoke at a press conference with my Republican colleagues to highlight the negative effects this will have on West Virginia, our country, and our allies. You can watch my full remarks by clicking here or on the image below.
Securing the Border and Supporting our Allies
The current situation at our southern border is chaos. I’ve seen it firsthand, and I hear about it from West Virginians back home consistently. Make no mistake: this catastrophe is entirely of President Biden’s making. President Biden has the power to get our border under control by simply following the laws that are already in place.
Based on the overwhelming feedback I received from West Virginians who have conveyed their concerns, I was unable to vote to advance the national security supplemental funding bill that included the border deal. This vote does not end our need to work toward efforts to secure our border, as well as the important national security interests within this supplemental.
Legislative Update
Last week, I joined a bipartisan group of senators to reintroduce the Building Our Largest Dementia (BOLD) Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Reauthorization Act of 2024. This legislation would reauthorize funding for public health initiatives across the country to combat Alzheimer’s disease and preserve brain health. By empowering our federal and state public health agencies to play an expanded role in areas such as increasing early detection and supporting dementia caregiving, this legislation will continue to have a direct impact on millions of Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and their families.
Also last week, I voted to advance the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2024 out of the Senate Commerce Committee, of which I am a member. Among the many provisions in this legislation, 13 priorities I fought for were included in the bill. These will benefit West Virginia and fliers, and I’m glad to see them included. This bill invests in airport infrastructure, promotes safety and American leadership in aviation, and strengthens consumer service.
I also joined my colleague, U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), in introducing a Congressional Review Act (CRA) joint resolution of disapproval to overturn the Biden administration’s illegal emissions performance measure being imposed on state departments of transportation (DOTs) and metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs).
In 2023, the Federal Highway Administration issued a rule mandating that DOTs and MPOs set declining emissions targets, attempting to use authority that was specifically excluded from the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that became law in 2021. As we’ve done before, I am committed to working with my Senate and House colleagues to hold the Biden administration accountable.
Recently, I joined a bipartisan group of my Senate colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden calling on him to enforce current law and act against Iran’s illicit oil trade through sanctions. Strengthening sanctions on Iranian oil is especially critical in light of the ongoing attacks on U.S. forces across the Middle East by Iranian-backed groups.
