Barbara Jean Hayes Stout

Barbara Jean Hayes Stout of Lake Floyd, WV departed this life on December 2, 2023. She was born in Salem, WV on June 29, 1941, daughter of the late Denzil R. Hayes and Genevieve Elder Hayes (Hickman).

Barbara was a graduate of Salem High School, Salem College, and West Virginia University. She retired from the Wetzel County Board of Education as a County Administrator. Previously, she had been a classroom teacher, coach, drama director, principal at Doddridge County High School, and member and president of Doddridge County Board of Education. Barbara was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where she was actively involved in the church choir, taught Sunday School, was Superintendent of the Sunday School program, Women’s Bible Study, and other church activities. A quote from her, “I have been pretty insignificant in God’s total scheme of things, but am a true believer in God, the Father, Jesus Christ, His Son, and the Holy Spirit. I hope my passing through this life has made a positive difference in many lives.”

Barbara is survived by her son, Richard Jason Stout, and wife, Angel, West Union; one brother, Jeff Hayes, WV; sister-in-law, Diana Stout, Charleston; grandchildren, Kelsey Stout and Thair Stout, Kentucky; Lexie, Lauren, Rissa, and Tori, WV; great grandchildren, Brenson and Finn, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Stout; two brothers, Tom Hickman and Mike Hayes; her step-father, Castle Hickman; her step-mother, Rosalyn Nutter Hayes; her paternal grandparents, who raised her, Oliver and Montona Hayes; her maternal grandparents, Dan and Opal Elder; one sister-in-law, Mary Jo Hickman.

The family will receive friends at Davis Funeral Home-Salem, 1999 W Main Street, Salem, WV on Monday, December 4, 2023 from 11:00 AM until time of Funeral Service at 1:00 PM with Rev David McCauley presiding.
