THE WEEKLY SHAMAN

In accordance with the autumn harvest, I decided to do an article on the corn dolly and other scarecrow like effigies. At the end of fall harvest the Celts among others, would take of the harvest and weave into a doll like harvest to be kept until the next planting in the spring. The corn dolly would be placed over a threshold in the rafters of a barn to ward off the evil eye and evil spirits. Often the corn dolly would be dressed in a frilly dress which has led many to speculate that it is a relic of the cult of Mother Nature or Mother Earth. When the spring planting would roll back around the dolly would be tilled back into the earth re-introducing the spirit of the harvest back into the ground. This was seen as a way to ensure a good harvest in the fall. I have often wondered if the corn dolly was an antecedent to the kitchen witch one might find in the kitchen of the old granny women here in the hills. And so, it goes.
