Welcome Back to School!

The 2023-2024 school year begins Wednesday, August 16. I love the start of the school year! This year we will have several new teachers, new staff and, of course, new students.
Several years ago, the state legislature allowed for increased school choice by requiring “open enrollment” in every school district throughout the state. Parents have more choice in school selection and parents see Doddridge County as a great choice for their children. They choose us for our academics (perennially in the top 10 in the General Summative Assessment), our great athletic tradition, and our arts programs. They know that their children will be loved and appreciated here as we provide them with the opportunity to become the best version of themselves.
We will also have a new softball field fan experience. New spectator stands, concession, and bathrooms are being built to provide safe and accessible viewing of games. During the first few weeks of school, we will share our parking lot with the construction crew, but they are making good progress and we should have the full parking lot back soon.
Speaking of the General Summative Assessment, last year’s scores have been released. Doddridge County was again the highest scoring district with a single high school and the only such district to score in the top ten. The districts above us are much bigger districts, but we are, year in and year out, successfully competing against them. Congratulations to the students, teachers, and staff at all of our schools. Next year we hope to improve upon our 8th place finish. So, let’s get to work and move up the rankings!
We live in a great, supportive community. We have great community support not only for our schools, but also throughout other community groups. The 4h and FFA Livestock Show and Sale demonstrates what can happen when businesses and community groups join together. Another example is the children’s play that the Mountaineer Creative Arts Council produces every year. Our County Park and the Fair Board put together a fantastic County Fair every year. Our churches bind our community together and provide so much for those in need throughout the county. The Family Resource Network just organized a fantastic Back to School Bash were community business donated thousands of dollars of products and services, including free haircuts! Thank you to every business and community group that participated in the bash.
I could go on and on with the many ways Doddridge County citizens take care of each other. I am so proud to call Doddridge County my home.
Welcome back students!
