Special Excess Levy Taken Before the Commission

Special Excess Levy Taken Before the Commission

At the August 1st, Commission Meeting, under Future Funding and Levy Request, Ora Ash, Member of the DC Health Department Board, along with represenatatives from the DC Park (Greg Cottrell), Library Board (Richard McMillan) and Board Members from other agencies that recieve funding from the Special Excess Levy, spoke to the Commissioners indicatting that they are not sure if the Special Excess Levy that provide funds for DC 4-H, DC Parks, DC Health Department and DC Library will be necessary in the future, due to the increase in the County’s income from taxes.
With that in mind, Mr. Ash also noted that the Laws surrounding timing of placing the Special Excess Levy on a Ballot has changed and if the Commissioners wanted to continue this Levy that the documentation necessary would have to be completed prior to the Primary 2024 Election and this issue placed on the Ballot.
In the discussion, Mr. Ash pointed out the increased amount of money that the County was collecting from the regular taxes, the County could afford to pick up the funding that was necessary to keep the agencies.
Shawn Glaspell made it clear that most of the “left over” funds that has existed in the past few years came from saving monies needed for matching grants and other projects and that there is no guarentee that the tax collected year to year would increase or decrease.
With that said he made the motion to place the Special Excess Levy on the ballot for the Primary election and if itpassed they could move forward but if it didn’t pass, then they would not re run it in the upcoming election cycle.
