Anyone familiar with Washington Irving’s 1890 classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow featuring the headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow will be familiar with headless ghosts. The Dullohan is just such a spirit. In some versions the ghost drives a black death coach drawn by four headless black horses. Sometimes the phantom would be seen carrying his severed head grinning from ear to ear. Other times the headless phantom rides a black coach made from human bones and pulled by four horses with fleshless skulls. Anyone who see this terrible apparition might either be struck blind or drop from fright. Tales of these apparitions can be found through our Medieval England and Wales. There are many tales of the reanimated corpses of people executed by beheading. And so, it goes.
