Cross Country — By Josh Weekley

Doddridge Invitational – Girls score a solid 3rd behind Preston and Fairmont Senior.  Another excellent effort from Alexis Lamb.  Having never gotten to run our course before, we weren’t sure how she would handle “Bertha.”  She handled it well.  21:35 for 2nd, falling only to AAA All-Stater Allie Martin of Preston.  Maria Bee scores a strong 5th in 22:10, darn near 4th.  Emily Gola with easily her best run of the year today for 8th in 22:37.  Hailey Keith gets 19th in 23:54.  I think this was her best one so far as well.  I felt like both had much better efforts today.  There is still much conditioning to do so they hold up better over the whole race, but today was definitely a step in the right direction.  Jocelyn Atkinson goes 27:29 for 54th.  That was within 12 seconds of her run at Mineral Wells on Saturday.  Nora Sias goes 27:51 for 57th, also only 12 seconds off her Saturday run.  Cloe Tallman takes a nice step forward in her 2nd race, going 28:50 for 66th, which is just over a minute faster than her race on Saturday.  She also PR’d in the mile again.  Gabby Gogan had easily her best run of the year so far, getting 72nd in 29:52.  That’s over 4:00 faster than last week.  Lacey Shepherd gets 76th with a 31:19, which is 49 seconds faster than on Saturday.  Overall, this was easily the best the girls have looked as a group this year.

Mudhole InvitationalMS Boys take the easy win despite being a bit short-handed with Trey McDonough absent on the day.  Jerod Trent led a threesome that took 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the race with Trent in 3rd at 11:27, Carter Sias in 4th in 11:29, and Cory Swentzel in 5th at 11:33.  Luke Rokisky snared the 10th spot in 12:10, followed by the rapidly improving Noah Bodkin in 11th in 12:35.  Isaac Johnson was 14th in 13:07 with Alex Johnson in 17th in 13:15.    Samuel Gola was 23rd in 13:34.  The boys put together a low score of 26 points to win by 43 over East Fairmont.

Mudhole InvitationalMS Girls dominate yet again, this time going 1-2-4-5-6-7, giving them the tiny score of 18 points.  Catherine Cottrill again took the top spot in 11:37.  Bailey Holden continued her strong season with a really nice run for 2nd in 11:46.  Payton Trent took a nice step forward with a more aggressive run, taking 4th in 12:26.  Cassidy Cumberledge was right behind in 5th in 12:34.  Marley Sias took the 6th spot in 12:58.  Payton Currey had her strongest run of the season in 7th at 13:06.  Aleigh Cheeseman rounded things out in 33rd in 17:17, winning a really tight race to the finish for the spot.

Mudhole Invitational – HS Boys bring the heat and take the win with a tiny 21 points.  This course was a little short (3.06 miles) and a lot flat, and the weather was perfect…a great combination for some really fast times.  Just for reference, that’s about 80 meters short, or 15 seconds at 5:00 pace, 18 seconds at 6:00 pace, 21 seconds at 7:00 pace, and 24 seconds at 8:00 pace.  Carter Lipscomb took yet another win with yet another stellar time, scoring a 15:03.  This would have been about a 15:18 equivalent, which would be the top HS time ever for a DCHS runner.  Levi Grandt ran 15:26 at the Footlocker South Meet back in 2007.  Trent Gola scored a 3rd place finish with a new PR of 16:42.  Brennan Miller was 4th with an All-Time PR of 17:04 (a season best by about a minute).  William Atkinson was 6th in 17:44, a career PR and also a season best by about a minute.  Joshua Berke was 9th in 18:58, his first excursion under 19:00.  Kaden Smith gets 29th in 22:11, which knocks a little over 2:00 off his season best time.  Logan Currey gets 33rd in 23:49, which knocks a little over 3:00 off his season best, and is an All-Time Pr by well over 2:00.  He skipped the 25’s and the 24’s.  Jimmy Berke gets 36th in 24:13, knocking about 3:00 of his season best time.  Great runs today, and that comes on the heels of a not-so-easy week where we had a tough meet on Tuesday, some hill work on Wednesday, and a long run on Thursday.  Well done.

Mudhole Invitational – The HS Girls one-up the boys a bit by recording a perfect score of 15.  Of course, they were the only complete team in the field, but still…  The girls were told before the race that they should go 1-2-3-4, and they responded, not only by getting those spots, but by crushing the #5 runner, who was well over a minute behind.  Alexis Lamb picked up her first win with a strong 19:43 time, knocking 1:14 off her PR.  Maria Bee had an excellent, evenly paced run, following pre-race instructions exceptionally well, and was 2nd in 19:54, and knocked 1:13 off her PR.  Emily Gola got out a little strong and took 3rd in 20:59, getting a season best by 1:19.  Hailey Keith had easily her best run of the year in 4th in 21:13, a season best by 2:00.  Nora Sias was 9th in 24:20 and looked the best she has all season, recording a season best by over 3:00.  Jocelyn Atkinson also had an excellent run, getting 10th in 24:40, nearly a 3:00 season best for her, and an All-Time PR by over 2:16.  Cloe Tallman finished 16th in 25:45, a PR by over 3:00.  Gabby Gogan was 24th in 27:56, easily a season best for her as well, getting it by nearly 2:00.  Lacey Shepherd was 25th in 27:58 looking the best she has all year as well, recording a season best by well over 3:00.  The boys laid down a challenge with their performance, and the girls responded in kind.  Well done ladies!
