SOWING AND REAPING

Albert Farley

In Galatians 6:7, Paul, an apostle of Christ, wrote, “Be not deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”  These truths are universal in application – to all peoples in all areas of life.  They are true in both the physical and, also, the spiritual realms.

Be Not Deceived.  We, as human beings, are liable to deception!  Satan is the deceiver and the human heart “is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked…”. Jer 17:9.  He that trusts in his own heart is a fool.” Prov 28:6.  Our trust must be in God through Jesus Christ.  This is possible only through His written Word, the Holy Bible.  Jn 8:31, 32; 17:17; Rom 10:17; Jam 1: 21.

God Is Not Mocked.  Of course, mankind has mocked – and continues to mock God in their unbelieving and immoral lives, but we cannot do this without His knowledge and without His warnings of impending judgment and punishment in an eternal hell if we do not repent and receive forgiveness through the atoning blood of Christ upon the cross!  Mt 25:31-46 Lk 13:3,5.  The word mock means, “to make mouths at, i.e. ridicule,” “to turn up the nose at, sneer at, treat with contempt.”  We cannot do this without severe consequences.

Whatever A Man Sows, That He Will Also Reap.  It cannot be otherwise.  If we do not sow, we cannot reap.  If we sow little, we will reap little; if we sow much, we will reap much. 2 Cor 9:6.  We cannot expect to reap something we have not sown.  Hosea 8:7; Prov 22:8.

In This Life, We All Either Sow To The Flesh Or We Sow To The Spirit.  The works of the flesh are evident: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like.”  Gal 5:19-21.  The fruit of the Spirit is: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, etc.  Gal 5:22-23.

Our Sins Will Find Us Out.  Num 32:23.  That is, they will ultimately “catch up with us,” and we will pay the consequences.  Sins cannot be hidden from God.  Sins cannot be “swept under the rug.”  Sins cannot be “renamed” with labels in an effort to escape their wickedness.  Sins cannot be denied and made to go away.

The Penalty Of Sin Must Be Paid.  The wages of sin is death.  Rom 14:23.  God has defined sin, and all of us are guilty in its many forms:  Sin is the violation of God’s laws.  1 Jn 3:4.  Sin is all unrighteousness.  1 Jn 5:17.  Sin is not doing what we know we ought to do.  Jam 4:17.  Sin is anything that is not of faith. Rom 14:23.

Our Sins Can be Forgiven in Christ!  Yes, the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord! Rom 6:23. Jesus carried all of our sins in His own body on the tree.  He, who knew no sin, was made to be sin for us!  2 Cor 5:21.  He has paid the price –  the wages – of our sins.  Isa 53:4, 5; Mt 26:28; Jn 1:29; 15:13; Rom 5:6-8.  We can escape our rightful punishment for sin – but only through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ!  By God’s wonderful grace, we can be washed, cleansed, justified, and sanctified through faithful obedience to the gospel of Christ.  Mk 16:15, 16.  Please read 1 Cor 6:9-11.

Dear friends, the final, eternal judgment of God awaits us all.  Heb 9:27; Jn 12:48.  All of us will be there.  Mt 25:31, 32; Jn 12:48; 2 Cor 5:10, 11.  It is true that, in this world, justice is not always awarded, but we must know that, in the end, everything is going to be made right!  1 Tim 5:24, 25.  What are we sowing?  Remember, God is not mocked.  May we all sow to the Spirit and reap everlasting life!
