HAPPY VALENTINES DAY FROM CHRIS FRIEND

One of the classic symbols of valentine day is the cupid according to legend Cupid was the son of Venus the goddess if love. Venus was in competition with the goddess Psyche causing the worship of Venus to all but disappear.  Venus sent Cupid out to cause Psyche to fall in love with a withered old man. Psyche had two sisters who had married well even though they were nowhere nearly as beautiful as Psyche. Psyche’s father became curious over Psyche’s upcoming marriage. He went to the oracle of Apollo and discovered that’ Psyche’s intended groom was also a dragon in disguise which would lead to her death. At night Psyche’s husband would come to her unseen in the dark. Her sisters became so very jealous that they revealed her husband’s true nature as a monster.  One evening Psyche spills hot oil on the dragon only to discover that the monster to be revealed to be Cupid who is believed to be a handsome youth. Having his true nature revealed and fearing his mother’s anger cupid flew off. In her search Psyche went to the temple of her hated mother-in-law. Venus gave Psyche the task of going down into the Underworld to steal some of Proserpina’s beauty. Psyche made the perilous journey having to pay Charon to take her across the river Styx. At this time the vindictive Venus was holding Cupid prisoner.  The curious Psyche had looked into the container which caused her to go into a deep sleep. When Cupid found her, he took away her sleep and put the contents back into the container which was sent onto Venus. Then Cupid went to Jupiter and gained consent that he could marry Psyche as her daughter-in-law. Some folklore suggests that the story of Cupid and Psyche maybe a variation of the classic fairytale Beauty and the Beast with Cupid impersonation the beast. Another might be the story of the Frog Prince with the princess kissing the frog and it turning into the handsome prince. And so, it goes.
