Dorothy Alice Pigott is the third daughter of Dorothy and Luther Pigott. She was born August 31, 1939 and graduated from DCHS in 1957. For short periods of time, she lived in Parkersburg and in the Washington DC area, but otherwise, she has proudly called Doddridge County her home for all of her long busy life.

Dottie has fourchildren — Pamela Hein of Lake Andes, South Dakota, Jan Nichols of West Union, Rich Beck of West Union and Garth Beck of Nutter Fort. She lost a daughter, Erin, in January 1970. She also has many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dottie graduated from Glenville State College and then began a long teaching career that spanned nearly thirty years. Even after she retired from teahing kindergarden, she subsitiuted for many years. In addition to raising a family and teaching, she also did much farming on the family farm where they lived in New Milton.

Soon after the new Doddridge County Emergency Squad was formed, Dottie began volunteering as the dispatcher on Sunday nights. She continued that for nearly twenty years. She worked for her father’s business, P&M Oil Company and then took over the duties of running it after her father died in 1979. Dottie was the secretary and treasurer of the West Union Christian Church for many years and continues as secretary of the Doddridge County Library Board after decades of that responsibility. She served for many years on the Doddridge County Economic Council. For several years, Dottie and her daughter, Jan owned and operated Beck Florist in West Union and was the chief soup and pie maker for T & L Hotdogs in West Union for six years. All these activities continued while she was a full-time teacher.

Another volunteering position Dottie held out side  of  Doddridge County was years as a weekly volunteer at United Hospital in Clarksburg. She continued there until the new hospital was built then she transferred to The Veterans Hospital in Clarksburg.  She faithfully worked there until Covid forced them to temporarily end their volunteer services.

She also served one term as a member of the Doddridge County Board of Education.

In recent years, Dottie has volunteered several times a week to read to preschoolers in both Doddridge and Ritchie Counties.

When you think of Doddridge as being a special place, you must also think of Dottie Pigott and all she has done to make it that way.
