Currydale CEOS Meeting – July 1, 2021

The Currydale CEOS Club met at the WVU Conference Meeting Room on July 1, 2021 for our regular meeting. Debbie Crislip called the meeting to order at 10:24 a.m. Denise Heater’s birthday was that same day, so we sang Happy Birthday to her. Also, Joyce and John Nicholson were celebrating their 49th wedding anniversary, so we sang Happy Anniversary to them. Since it was the week of July 4th, Dene Ryan had recorded “The Star-Spangled Banner.” She asked that everyone stand and sing along with the recording.

Our meditations were presented by Denise Heater. She read a beautiful song, called “Scars in Heaven” recorded by “Casting Crowns.” She also presented a very impressive reading entitled “Sermon We See” by Edgar A. Guest-1026.

We had seven members answering the roll call. Books read and volunteer hours were also recorded.

The minutes were passed out for review. Motion was made, seconded and approved.

Dene Ryan present the treasurer’s report. Motion was made, seconded and approved. The Flower Fund was also collected.

Our Health Motivator, Joyce Nicholson, taught us some helpful facts on iron. One needs to determine the average amount of iron you consume daily through foods. Iron is a mineral that helps our body function each day. It aids red blood cells in carrying oxygen throughout the body. Since the recommended daily amounts of iron are for different ages, it is important to check with your doctor for the appropriate amount per individual. Eating iron-rich, protein-based foods such as meat, poultry, seafood, lentils, beans, tofu and nuts is one means of absorbing daily iron. Also, iron is absorbed through plants, such as dark green leafy vegetables and iron-fortified breads and cereals. Vitamin C also helps increase the amount of iron absorbed from food. Anemia occurs when the body is deficient in red blood cells. The maximum daily dosage of iron is in the range of 40-45 milligrams. We all were included in the Quick Club Activity and the Chuckle of the Month: Iron Man was suspicious that Aqua Man invited him to a pool party. He had rust issues!!!

Dene Ryan taught our lesson on “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Mary Pickersgill, a 29-year-old widower of Baltimore, was contracted by Major George Armistead to make the first U.S. Flags in 1813. The first was a storm flag, measuring 17×25 feet, and the second was a garrison flag, measuring 30×42 feet. Since these flags were so large, she had to sew the banners on the floor of Claggett’s Brewery which was near her home. Mr. Armistead wanted the garrison flag so large that it could be seen for many miles. Pickersgill was paid $574.44 for making the flags. During the battle, attorney Francis Scott Key was on a British ship anchored 4 miles out. When Key saw the flag flying over Fort McHenry, he knew they had been victorious and began writing a poem. Within weeks the poem had been published in newspapers up and down the East Coast. During the Civil War, the tune became a favorite with Northerners, and in 1931, it became the U.S. National Anthem. Growing weary, the family gifted the flag to the Smithsonian Institute in 1912 with the request that it always be available for public viewing. The Star-Spangled Banner permanently resides in a pressurized chamber on a table that is tilted by 10 degrees. This allows public viewing and does not stress the fragile material. Dene taught a very informative and interesting lesson. She gave us papers and beautiful pictures of the flag and how to display the American flag. Great job Dene!!!

We received a letter from the Life Choice Pregnancy Resource Center in Clarksburg, WV, asking for a donation to their facility. Motion was made, seconded and approved to send them a donation. Also, we received a flyer from the Doddridge County FRN who is partnering with the Doddridge County Senior Citizens to provide each member an adult bib. They are asking for any size men’s shirts or ladies’ blouses to be dropped off in the box provided in the foyer of the Doddridge County Library by the end of July. Our Club plans to help supply the needed shirts for their project.

There was nothing reported from the different committees.

The Doddridge County FRN is asking community members, churches and organizations to bring non-perishable food items for those needing immediate food assistance. Everyone agreed to take food items to be available for “The Blessing Box,” located curbside at 202 Court Street, West Union – open 24/7.

Flowers were sent to one of our members, Donna McKinney, who was in the hospital.

August 5, 2021 will be our next meeting at the Blandville Pavilion. Plans were to arrive around 5:30 and get everything set up to eat at 6:00 p.m. This picnic is for all club members, family and their friends. During this meeting, we will be voting on our President for the coming year.

The County Council Meeting will be at the Doddridge County Park on July 13, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.

The Doddridge County Fair will be August 17-21, 2021. If you are supplying exhibits for the fair you can get your registration packet by July 26, 2021. The Livestock Show and Sale will be July 25-29.

The Ephraim Bee Festival will be at the Doddridge County Park on July 16-17.

The Friendship Tray from Denise Heater was won by Dene Ryan.

Before our meeting adjourned, Debbie Crislip introduced us to “Bird Bingo.” She gave everyone a card with very colorful birds and some M&M candy pieces to use as markers. We all enjoyed playing and everyone got a prize!!!

Motion was made, seconded and approved to adjourn at 12:45 p.m.
