Betty Lou (Morgan) Merritt

   Betty Lou (Morgan) Merritt, 90 of the Big Isaac Community went home to be with the Lord on February 11, 2021. She passed away peacefully at her home of 67 years.   

   Betty was the youngest daughter of Roy E. and Ethel (Vanscoy) Morgan. Betty was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

   On April 8th. Of 1953, Betty married the love of her life, Eddie Lee Merritt, who preceded her in death in 2003. She was also preceded in death by her oldest daughter Marsha Lee Lloyd in 2019. Betty’s sibling that preceded her where Pauline (Orbie) Swisher, Roxie (Elmer) Crislip, Lucille (Lewis) Swann, Erma (George) Polan, Nellie (Bernard) Jerden, Ralph (Bonnie) and (Louise) Morgan, Ora (Mona Lee) Morgan and Roy Jr. Also preceding Betty were sister in law Geneieve Yerkey, Betty Gain and brother and sister in law Cecil and Pauline Merritt. Also in laws Ward and Bessie Merritt. 

   Betty is survived by her youngest daughter Karen (Michael) Diaz of the Big Isaac community. Granddaughter Kimberlee Jo and Adam Kelley , along with great grandchildren Malachi, Lyla and Micah of Mount Clare. Also survived by son in law James Lloyd of Fairmont, W.V. 

   Betty was a life long member of the Mount Vernon Baptist Church. She had also in the past been active in the Broad Run Baptist Association. She had studied the Bible and had lead Bible study at her church. 

Betty graduated from Doddridge County High School in 1947 and then attended Salem College. She graduated from Salem College in 1954 with a degree in Elementary Education. 

   Betty spent her entire teaching career in Doddridge County Schools retiring after 35 years. She started teaching in a one room school at Coldwater with grades 1-8 in 1953. She ended her teaching career after several years being a teaching principal at Big Isaac Grade School.   She retired in 1988, enjoyed being an educator and touched many lives. 

   Betty was a member of the Big Isaac CEO’s and was honored with Doddridge County Citizen of the Year. 

   Betty’s family would like to thank her caregivers that made it possible for her to stay in her beloved home. They would also like to thank the UHC Hospice team. 

   Funeral services will be conducted in the Harbert Funeral Home 287 W. Main St. on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at 1:00p.m. with Pastor Ken Kelley presiding. Interment will follow in the Big Isaac Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 from 4-8 p.m. and after 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday until time of the service. Harbert Funeral Home is privileged to serve the Merritt family.
