Town of West Union 2021 Elections

Even though in the last year there has been a Primary Election, a General Election, and a Levy Election, it is time again for another election to be held on June 8th, 2021, to elect the Mayor, City Council, and Recorder for the Town of West Union.

The schedule for this Election began on January 1st which was the first day to receive applications for absentee ballots, the Candidate filing period was January 11th through January 30th and the deadline to submit Notice of Intent for Class IV (early voting was January 29th.

Those filing their Application For Candidacy for two year terms include:

For Mayor

James D. Friend (Incumbent)

     Kortni Ann Sandridge

     Ralph E. Washington Sr.

For Council (Choose 5):

  James D. Musgrave

     Theresa M. Knight

     Myla Thorpe (Incumbent)

     Mark L. Younkin (Incumbent)

     Donald R. Dotson Jr.

     Ted Anderson

It is to be noted that currently nobody has filed for the Recorder’s position.

Regulations that pertain to Write in Candidates, taken from the “ Municipal Election Guide”, provided by the WV Secretary of State’s Office, states:  “Write-in candidates are required to file a certificate of announcement at least 49 days before the general election to have votes for them counted. The filing must be physically in the clerk’s office, not just postmarked, by the filing deadline. Write-in candidates are required to file campaign financial statements. No filing fee is required for official write-in candidates. W. Va. Code § 3-6-4a; see Phillips v. Hechler, memorandum opinion and order (2000).

Only votes for certified write-in candidates are to be counted. Precincts are notified of official write-in candidates. Posting of official write-in candidates are required at all voting precincts, including the early voting location established by city council. W. Va. Code § 3-6-5.”

Historically, the Town’s Election has had as little as 10 voters with the last two elections that have been held having around 75 voters to respond.
