Past President of NBRT Passes

 Mark Edward Abbott, 72, of Parkersburg, WV, passed away at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, November 17, 2020.

   He was born May 30, 1948 at Dennison, Iowa, son of Edward and Frances Rule Abbott.

   Mark was a retired U.S. Air Force Veteran and graduated from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. He was also active in numerous community organizations, in Wood and Ritchie Counties as a grant writer and officer and president of the North Bend Rails to Trails for twenty years. Mark was also a member and an officer in the Parkersburg Alternative Transportation Association, the WV Parks Foundation, the Blennerhassett Historical Foundation, the Friends of Blennerhassett Steering Committee, the Parkersburg Arts Center, the WV Symphony Orchestra of Parkersburg, the Parkersburg Community Foundation, the Greater Parkersburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council, Parkersburg Area Photography Club, Marietta Photographic Society, and many others.

   He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Katherine Hodson Abbott; one daughter, Dr. Samantha (Jason) Walter of Toronto, Canada; one step-daughter, Cheryl (Tom) Corbett of Aragon, Georgia; one son, Nathan (Melissa) Stephens of Leland, North Carolina; one step-son, William Gilliland of Ellenboro, WV; one brother, Michael (Lori) Abbott of St. Petersburg, Florida; his brother-in-law, Larry Harris of Macon, Georgia; four grandchildren and four step grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

   In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by two sisters, Cheryl Harris and Connie Abbott and his step-mother, Nancy Abbott.

   A graveside service with military rights will be held at the National Cemetery, Grafton, WV at a later date.
