Roger “Swick” Ashworth McClain

Roger “Swick” Ashworth McClain, 86 of New Milton departed this life on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at his residence.  He was born on December 27, 1933 at New Milton a son of the late Stacy L. and Freda P. Ashworth McClain.

   He is survived by his children, Stacy McClain II, New Milton, Ronda Ash (Bryan), West Union, John McClain (Brenda), Center Point, Jennifer Leggett (Ray), Oxford, Alicia Healey (Mike) Shinnston, Angela McClain, West Union, Roger A. McClain II, Jarvisville, several grandchildren, Marla Landis, Brittany Ash, Jenna Baker, Allen Baker, Stephanie Frey, Candace Winning, J.B. Healey, Kenneth Healey, Nicole Coontz, Haley McClain, Zach Davis, several great grandchildren, one sister, Nancy McClain Coffman and his first wife Mary Glaspell and several special nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his second wife, Catherine Diana Travis McClain, one daughter, Amber Catherine Ann McClain, one grandson, Gordon Wade Swiger, two sisters, Winifred Jane Wanstreet, Helen McClain, one daughter-in-law, Rebeccia McClain, 

   Swick was a 1951 graduate of Doddridge County High School and a 1955 graduate of Salem College where he received a Bachelor’s Degree.  He received his Masters Degree in 1966 from West Virginia University in Elementary Education Grades 1-8.  Swick began his teaching career in 1955 in Harrison County at Lumberport High School.  He then transferred to Wood County and taught for 10 years. Swick returned to his native county where he taught at several local grade schools and served as principal.  He finished his career of 34 years in 1989 at Doddridge County High School. Swick had his degrees in Social Studies, General Shop, grade 7-12. He was a 50 year member of St. Johns Lodge, #24 AF & AM Shinnston   He spent his summers working for Smith Lumber as a carpenter.  Swick enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting, gardening and canning. He was an avid coin collector, and loved spending time with his family and drinking a cold one with his buddies at dark thirty. The McClain family would like to give a special thank you to Ralphie Dillon for taking excellent care of their dad. 

   Funeral services will be conducted in the Spurgeon Funeral Home 56 Front St. West Union on Sunday August 16, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Chad Ash presiding.  Interment will follow in the Childers Cemetery, New Milton.  The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Saturday, August 15, 2020 from 4-8 p.m.  Expressions of sympathy may be extended to the family at  Spurgeon Funeral Home is privileged to serve the McClain family.
