Hawthorne- The Thorny Spring

Flowering Shrub of the rose family has a long history in Folklore. Likely derived from its connection to Christs crown of thorns. It is often used as a charm against witches and ghosts. In ancient Rome it was often used against sorcery. Leaves were placed in the cribs of infants to keep away evil spirits. A sprig of hawthorn was used against storms and lightning. In England and Ireland, it was considered unlucky to bring Hawthorne into the house causing death. In German folklore- Hawthorne was believed to come from lightning and used in funeral. Pyres Fairies have a long association with Hawthorne being sacred to them.
