Our Lesson, “Communication Between Generations,” was presented by Debbie. Finding the balance between love and limits is one of the bigger challenges for any caregiver. It can be especially challenging for grandparents to set limits for grandchildren. There are approximately 41,000 children in WV living in their grandparents’ homes. Of those, 23,000 are being cared for solely by their grandparents. Difficulty in communication between generations often stems from a difference in values, morals and respect. The first step in healthy communication between generations is to recognize the differences in values, beliefs and attitudes. Older adults have a much different view on life than today’s teenagers. Acknowledging these differences and moving on helps open a pathway for communication. Have family meetings which should be a positive time for everyone to express their feelings. Great job, Debbie!!!
